Eclipse Timing the Milky Way’s Gravitational Potential

چکیده
Abstract We show that a small but measurable shift in the eclipse midpoint time of eclipsing binary (EBs) stars ∼0.1 s over decade baseline can be used to directly measure Galactic acceleration Milky Way at ∼kiloparsec distances from Sun. consider contributions period drift rate dynamical mechanisms other than Galaxy’s gravitational field and reliably measured using sample Kepler EBs with orbital stellar parameters literature. The contribution tidal decay we estimate here is an upper limit assuming are not tidally synchronized. find there about 200 detached have estimated timing precision better 0.5 s, for which effects subdominant signal. illustrate method prototypical, precisely timed EB archival light curve modern synthetic HST (which provides baseline). This novel establishes realistic possibility constrain dark matter substructure potential accelerations, along emerging new methods, including pulsar extreme-precision radial velocity observations. signal grows quadratically time. Therefore, given baselines established near future distant EBs, expect space missions like JWST Roman Space Telescope.

BCM and Membrane Potential: Alternative Ways to Timing Dependent Plasticity
The Bienenstock-Cooper-Munroe (BCM) rule is one of the best-established learning formalisms for neural tissue. However, as it is based on pulse rates, it can not account for recent spike-based experimental protocols that have led to spike timing dependent plasticity (STDP) rules. At the same time, STDP is being challenged by experiments exhibiting more complex timing rules (e.g. triplets) as we...
متن کاملTiming the eclipse of HD 185510 ?
HD185510 (=V1379 Aql) is an eclipsing double-lined RS CVn binary containing a K0 III/IV giant and a hot subluminous companion. An IUE ultraviolet light curve has been obtained through the eclipse of the companion with an average time resolution of one measurement every 19 minutes. This was suucient to resolve all four times of contact and, with data from previous work on this system, to derive ...
متن کاملThe Milky Way Galaxy as a Strong Gravitational Lens
We study the gravitational lensing effects of spiral galaxies by taking a model of the Milky Way and computing its lensing properties. The model is composed of a spherical Hernquist bulge, a Miyamoto-Nagai disc and an isothermal halo. As a strong lens, a spiral galaxy like the Milky Way can give rise to four different imaging geometries. They are (i) three images on one side of the galaxy centr...
متن کاملPotential Condensed Fuel for the Milky Way
Potential condensed clouds of gas in the Galactic halo are examined in the context of the recent models of cooling, fragmenting clouds building up the baryonic mass of the Galaxy. 582 high-velocity clouds (HVCs) are defined as the potential infalling, condensed clouds and the sample’s spatial and velocity distribution are presented. With the majority of the hydrogen in the clouds ionized (∼ 85%...
متن کاملX-Ray Eclipse Timing in the LMXB EXO0748-676
Orbital period changes are an important diagnostic for understanding low mass X-ray binary (LMXB) accretioninduced angular momentum exchange and overall system evolution. We present our most recent results for the eclipse timing of the LMXB EXO 0748−676. Since its discovery in 1985 it has apparently undergone three distinct orbital period “epochs", each characterized by a different orbital peri...
